Do You Know?

The iMac G5 was Apple’s first desktop where the entire computer was built directly behind the screen, a design concept that lives on in today’s iMacs. It marked the transition away from the dome-and-arm iMac G4 and toward a unified flat panel, cleaner, more modern, and efficient. Internally, the use of the PowerPC G5 processor brought desktop-class performance to an all-in-one form, making it ideal for creative pros, students, and families alike. It was also the last iMac to use PowerPC architecture before the Intel-based iMacs arrived in 2006.

iMac G5 (2004–2006)

Unveiled in August 2004, the iMac G5 reimagined Apple’s all-in-one desktop line with a striking new form, one where the computer was fully integrated behind the flat-panel LCD, eliminating the need for a separate base or stand. With its clean, white enclosure and minimalist profile, the iMac G5 looked more like a piece of art than a computer, yet delivered the powerful performance expected from Apple’s professional-grade machines.Powered by the PowerPC G5 processor, the same chip used in high-end Power Mac G5 towers, the iMac G5 handled tasks like video editing, music production, and photo management with ease. It offered fast SATA hard drives, DDR/DDR2 RAM, and SuperDrive options for CD/DVD authoring. The iMac G5’s design paved the way for Apple’s Intel-based iMacs, and ultimately the aluminum iMacs and today’s Apple Silicon-powered models. It was the last iMac to run on PowerPC architecture, marking the end of an era.
